Engineer Handwerker died from injuries received when Engine 6 slammed into the back of a streetcar while responding to a false alarm at 4:20 A.M. His Captain, Lee Paul, and Private Lee McGee also died in the incident. This was the second fatal incident involving a motorized vehicle in the history of the department.
