Incident

Captain Paul died from injuries received when Engine 6 slammed into the back of a streetcar while responding to a false alarm at 4:20 A.M. His driver, Engineer Charles Handwerker, and private Lee McGee were also killed in this incident. This was the second fatal incident involving a motorized vehicle in the history of the Department.

Captain Paul joined the Louisville Fire Department as a substitute Fireman on August 18, 1904 and was promoted to Captain November 30, 1918. At the time of his death, he was a resident of the firehouse.
