Firefighter Steven Harrington

I knew Steve through his sister. It is so good to know that his memory lives on through this site. He was a very brave and selfless man and will always be remembered and missed.

I met Steve in high school and we became friends instantly. He was an "all around good guy." I did not understand it at the time, but he always wanted to be a firefighter. (Of course, he never understood why I wanted to be a police officer.) We did not stay in close contact after high school, but would look each other up from time to time and catch up.

I ran into Steve at a gas station 2-3 days before his death. He had not changed a bit and was just as passionate about serving his community as a firefighter as he had ever been. When news came -- 27 years ago today -- that he had died trying to save a child, I knew Steve had been doing what he loved and that he had willingly risked and then gave his life so that someone else might live. That is who he was. He is still missed...
