Incident
Firefighter Harrington and other members of the Buechel Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at 2034 Bruce Avenue in the early afternoon. When they arrived, they observed the first floor with flames and heavy smoke.
They were told that all the residents had gotten out of the home except for a three-year old boy who was last seen running toward his second-floor bedroom.
Firefighters Steve and Phil Harrington (no relation) made entry through a second-floor window and began working their way toward the bedroom. A short time later, a flashover occurred and severely injured both firefighters. Firefighter Phil Harrington was able to make it back to the window where he was pulled to safety by other firefighters. Firefighter Steve Harrington perished in the blaze.
The child's body was later found in his bed.
When the Jefferson County Fire Training Academy later dedicated its Flashover Simulator, it was named in honor of Firefighter Steve Harrington and Sergeant Craig Drury of the Highview Fire Dept.

I met Steve in high school and we became friends instantly. He was an "all around good guy." I did not understand it at the time, but he always wanted to be a firefighter. (Of course, he never understood why I wanted to be a police officer.) We did not stay in close contact after high school, but would look each other up from time to time and catch up.
I ran into Steve at a gas station 2-3 days before his death. He had not changed a bit and was just as passionate about serving his community as a firefighter as he had ever been. When news came -- 27 years ago today -- that he had died trying to save a child, I knew Steve had been doing what he loved and that he had willingly risked and then gave his life so that someone else might live. That is who he was. He is still missed...
