Trooper Delano G. Powell

Trooper Powell and a deputy were attempting to serve a warrant in Breathitt County when Trooper Powell was shot and killed. The suspect, under the cover of a darkened porch opened fire on the officers with a shotgun as they approached the house. Trooper Powell was shot by the suspect and then pulled to his patrol by the deputy who began transporting him toward the hospital. Trooper Powell was transferred to an ambulance on the way to the hospital but died before he arrived.

The suspect was caught later and convicted.
