While fighting a fire in the Bishop and Spears Peanut Warehouse at 510-512 North Second Street, a collapse occurred taking the life of Captain Hoell. He was a member of Truck #6. Firefighter Frank McDonald and Captain Barney McKernan also died in the collapse.
Captain Hoell was credited with introducing the Hook & Ladder (pompier) method of firefighting in St. Louis, New York and other major cities.
