Incident

On December 22,1988 Flight Nurse Karen Scherer was aboard an Air Evac helicopter transporting a patient from Marion Illinois to St. Francis Medical Center. While en route to St. Francis the helicopter encountered heavy fog and crashed into a field. Flight Nurse Karen Scherer was killed. In addition to Nurse Scherer fellow crew member Julie Huttegger, and the 7 year old patient also lost their lives.

Karen, we had dinner the night before in the cafeteria and you told me how much you loved being a flight nurse. You were a great co-worker in ICU and this was the next step in your career. You’re gone but not forgotten- you were a great nurse and sacrificed for others. Gone too soon.
