I will always be eternally grateful to Scott Davis - you see June 25, 2003, our house burnt to the ground. When the call went out Scott, who was the Fire Chief here in Yorktown at that time, was in his personal vehicle about a mile from the house so therefore he was the first on the scene. Bruce was still on the police department at that time and was on duty. When Scott arrived my daughter, Karissa, and her friend, Krystal, were hysterical because Bart, our retired K9 German Shephard was still in the house. Bruce told Scott where Bart would be hiding and gave him the german commands so he would come to him. Scott went into the house, commando crawling down one hallway and turning into another hallway calling for Bart. Bart came out, doing the commando crawl right towards Scott. Scott kept coaxing him out, while Scott was crawling backwards and Bart was in his face until Bart had his bearings and took off out the front door. I was out of town and I arrived 2 1/2 hours later and the first person to meet me was Scott with a big ol' hug. He explained that Karissa and her friend were slightly injured and that everyone was at the hospital. He explained to me what happened how they thought the fire started, rescusing Bart, etc. After talking to Scott for awhile Kris Thornburg then took me to the hospital because I was in no shape to drive. Don't ask me how I made it home in one piece or without a speeding ticket, I have absolutely no clue. Hot spots kept flaring up the next day so Scott and the crew spent the whole next day putting out the small fires - oh and getting the fire truck stuck in the yard, which had to be towed out. Bruce never let Scott live that down.

Our house was a total loss, lost a 3 month old kitten and my daughter and her friend had 1st degree burns. House was rebuilt, have had many kittens/cats since then and injuries have healed. I am very thankful for the Yorktown Fire Department and the other departments who responded but as I mentioned above - I will always be eternally grateful to Scott for rescuing Bart.

God Speed My Friend.

The Firefighter's Prayer

When I am called to duty, God, whenever flames may rage;

Give me strength to save some life, whatever be its age.

Help me embrace a little child before it is too late

Or save an older person from the horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout,

And quickly and efficiently to put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me,

To guard my every neighbor and protect his property.

And if, according to my fate, I am to lose my life;

Please bless with your protecting hand

my children and my wife.
