The Firefighter's Prayer

When I am called to duty, God, whenever flames may rage;

Give me strength to save some life, whatever be its age.

Help me embrace a little child before it is too late

Or save an older person from the horror of that fate.

Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout,

And quickly and efficiently to put the fire out.

I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me,

To guard my every neighbor and protect his property.

And if, according to my fate, I am to lose my life;

Please bless with your protecting hand

my children and my wife

Terry:

It saddens me that this day has come. I think back to so so many years ago when you first expressed your desire to be a firefighter – not just *a* firefighter, but a Buechel Firefighter. We were still in elementary school. How many people really know then what they want to do with their lives? But you were different.

We were still in high school when you so proudly fulfilled your dream – and I remember a few years later when you took it a step further and became one of the first career firefighters of the Buechel Fire Department. You could not have been prouder.

It is said that if one has a career he truly loves, he will never work a day in his life. You are one of the blessed few for whom those words are so very true.

Your life was driven by a passion to serve others – with your smile being the mark of your service and spirit.

It is my honor and privilege to call you “friend.”

Until we meet again…
