Firefighter Hilsman died in an explosion at a basement fire at Boltz Grocery on South Calhoun St. He was a member of Mechanics Engine & Hose Co. 1.
Firefighter Hilsman was the first recorded line-of-duty death in the Fort Wayne Fire Department.
