Patrolman Lawrence W. Claycomb

Officer Claycomb was killed while working special duties in response to the flood of 1937 -- one of the worst natural disasters in the city's history.

Army personnel had been deployed to Louisville to assist police. Officer Claycomb was on patrol riding in a military vehicle with 3 soldiers when the vehicle blew a tire and skidded down a steep cobblestone street into 15 feet of water.

Two citizens, a local banker and a telephone lineman were able to rescue two of the soldiers, but were unable to get Officer Claycomb and Army Private Robert T. Mueller out of the vehicle. Both the men drowned at approximately 10:00pm.
