Incident

Sheriff Lewis was shot and killed by a prisoner who had a gun smuggled into the jail. Sheriff Lewis tried to disarm the suspect but was shot several times.

The suspect escaped but was caught, convicted and sentenced to life in prison. He was paroled in 1992.

My grandmother, Laura Harding, was a friend of Sheriff Mike Lewis. We went to his house several times. He was such a great guy. I remember reporting on his killing in my social studies class. Today"s services for Boone County Deputy Jake Pickette brought all of this back.
