Incident

While arresting two suspects for kidnapping, robbery and auto theft State Trooper Streu and Marshall Larimer were shot and killed.

Having responded to a report of two men behind a school the two officers had handcuffed one suspect and was placing him in the patrol car when the second suspect opened fire, hitting Marshal Larimer.

The second suspect was wounded by State Trooper Streu's return fire. Trooper Streu went to the aid of Marshal Larimer and left his gun in the front seat. The handcuffed suspect retrieved the gun from the front seat and shot Trooper Streu.

One suspect was given two life sentences in prison. The other suspect was given one life sentence and was once again denied parole in February 2006.

The Sixth Street Bridge in Logansport was renamed the John J. Strue Memorial Bridge in 2001.
