Deputy Settles was killed after responding to a bank robbery in the 11000 block of East Washington Street in Cumberland. He entered the bank with his gun drawn and was slain before he could return fire.

Billy Ray Adams was given a life sentence after his conviction for the murder of Deputy Settles.

Deputy Settles served two tours in vietnam as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps.
