Patrolman Boyce was shot and killed when he responded to a robbery in progress while off duty and on his way home. The suspects shot him multiple times as they exited the restaurant's back door.
The suspects were sentenced to life in prison after their arrest. One suspect attempted to escape from Lake County Jail in 1997 and was killed. A second offender was denied parole on November 2, 2006.
Patrolman Boyce's son served as Chief of the Kouts Indiana Police Department from 2008 to 2013.
