Incident
As Officer Schachte was searching a suspect at the rear of his patrol car, a scuffle ensued. The suspect pulled a pistol and shot Officer Schachte. Officer Schachte was transported to Marion County General Hospital where he died.
The suspect was caught almost a year later in Detroit and received life in prison for the murder of Officer Schachte. He died in prison in 2014.
Officer Schachte was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
