Officer VanCleave was involved in an automobile accident as he rode in the rear of a stretcher car during the transport of a heart attack victim to a local hospital. Officer VanCleave was injured when a vehicle broadsided the stretcher car at the intersection of Seventh and Oak Streets. He died the next day at a local hospital from his injuries.
