Incident

Officer Griffin was responding to a domestic disturbance when he was shot and killed.

The suspect killed Officer Griffin and injured two other officers as they approached the residence before he barricaded himself in. He surrendered two hours later. The suspect had killed his former wife and her father as well as wounded her mother prior to the officers arrival.

Charged with three counts of murder, attempted murder and armed confinement the suspect was sentenced to death in 1980 and 2000. He died in 2006 before the sentence could be carried out.

Officer Griffin was the recipient of a purple heart while serving in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.
