Patrolman Thompson was killed when his patrol car was intentionally rammed by a suspect fleeing other officers in a stolen ambulance.
In order to avoid the oncoming speeding ambulance, Patrolman Thompson pulled his patrol car well off the road. The suspect driving the ambulance intentionally swerved off the road and purposely hit Patrolman Thompson's patrol car.
The suspect received a conviction of manslaughter.
State Road 39 from US 6 to US 30 in LaPorte County was dedicated the Neil G. Thompson Memorial Highway in 2002.
