Officer Banker was shot and killed after issuing a man a fishing citation. He had spotted the 26 year old man fishing in a spillway and had asked to see his license. When the man failed to produce one, Officer Banker cited him. As the officer walked away, the man retrieved a .22-caliber rifle from his vehicle and shot him multiple times. A nearby farmer who was a witness suffered a graze wound as he rushed to assist Officer Banker.
The suspect was convicted of murder and sentenced to life with a possibility of parole after 25 years. Parole was denied in 2012 and again in 2017.
There is 1 tribute for Conservation Officer Robert C. Banker.
