While fighting a fire in a warehouse of the Fisher Brothers Grocery Store at 11th avenue and Franklin Street, Captain Schnabel was struck and killed by a falling electric line. He was assigned to Truck #3. Because of Captain Schnabel's death, Mayor Heilman requested that power companies keep an expert representative on duty to attend to all fires in the city. This policy is still in place today.
