Incident

Firefighter Surbeck died when a brick wall collapsed on him and several other firefighters. They were fighting a fire on First Street that destroyed the George L. Mesker & Company and the Loewenthall's Commission House. Surbeck's son Walter followed him to the fire and watched as the wall fell on the firefighters, killing his father. Several hours after the collapse, Firefighter John Strange died of a heart attack.
