Incident

Captain Johnson of Hose Company #7 was overcome by heat while working at the Armstrong Furniture Factory fire on Franklin Street. He was taken home unconscious. Medical assistance was summoned for and provided but despite their efforts, he died the following day. Captain Johnson was the first Evansville firefighter to die in the line of duty. His great great grandson serves with the Evansville Fire Department today.
