Incident

Firefighter Hendrick was the driver of a 1,500-gallon fire department tanker (tender) participating in a water shuttle drill. The passenger in the truck was a 17-year-old trainee.

As the tanker traveled down the road, the vehicle's right wheels dropped off the roadway. Firefighter Hendrick over-corrected to the left and came back onto the road, riding the centerline. He corrected again and went off the roadway on the right-hand side. The tank separated from the vehicle, and the cab came to rest on its top.

Firefighter Hendrick was partially ejected. The trainee was fully ejected.

Firefighter Hendrick was removed from the vehicle and transported to the hospital by ambulance. He was pronounced dead at the hospital approximately 1 hour after the collision. The trainee was severely injured.

It's so hard to believe you've been gone for seven years almost. There isn't a day that goes by that you and your family don't pass in my thoughts. I remember the times when we fought fires and had training together and I'll never forget where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news on the radio about the accident. Wish I had more time with you to "put some water on it", but the time you were with us was great.Miss you bud3922
