Sergeant Watkins responded with the Shively Fire Dept. to Summerfield Manor. On arrival they found a smoldering fire in a clothes dryer. The fire was extinguished and Sergeant Watkins was in the process of setting up a fan for ventilation at which time he collapsed to the floor. CPR was administered by two staff nurses and he was transported to and pronounced dead upon arrival at Saints Mary & Elizabeth Hospital.
