Firefighter Lauth was riding on Squad 1 while responding to an alarm. As they responded, the apparatus struck a mushroom traffic signal at Meridian and Pratt Streets. The impact with the traffic signal caused Firefighter Lauth to strike his head on a chemical tank on the apparatus causing a severe head injury. Other firefighters flagged down a passing taxicab and Firefighter Lauth was transported to Methodist Hospital in the taxi. He died at the hospital a short time later.
