Lieutenant Kriech was responding to a motor vehicle crash when the apparatus he was riding on was struck by a train. He died from his injuries a week later.

Lieutenant Kriech was a United States Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was the first Indianapolis firefighter to become an Emergency Medical Technician.

Mike was a wonderful person to grow up with. He was the oldest of we kids in the block and he made sure nobody ever picked on us. We grew up in a wonderful era in America and Mike helped make if all the more wonderful. Although we did not remain close after we became adults, I will always remember him as a kind a caring person.
