Captain Morgan and Deputy Billy Ray Walls were shot and killed as they and a third deputy served a warrant on an elderly male for terroristic threatening.
The elderly subject lived in a 150-square-foot houseboat that was on land sitting on barrels. As they entered, the subject opened fire with a .30 caliber M-1 rifle. Deputy Walls was fatally wounded, Captain Morgan was critically wounded, and the third deputy was seriously wounded. The deputies were able to return fire and kill the suspect. Captain Morgan died of his injuries two weeks later.
Over 20 handguns were found in the home.
