As Illinois State Police and members of the Iroquois County Sheriff's Office (Illinois) engaged in a pursuit of a suspect who was reported to be holding a hostage, the pursuit crossed into Newton County, Indiana. Corporal Brandon Schreiber and other Indiana law enforcement officers joined in.
The pursuit turned back west and ended in Sheldon, Illinois. The suspect exited his vehicle and fired a shot that struck Corporal Schreiber. Other officers immediately returned fire and the suspect was killed. Police did not find a hostage.
Corporal Schreiber was removed from life support ten days later. His final act of service was to be an organ donor.
