Incident

After his shift ended, Sergeant Osborn went to the Subway Sandwich Shop that he owned with his wife. The business had been robbed a few weeks earlier, and he wanted to be with the lone employee at closing.

At approximately 10:45 p.m., just before closing, a male entered the restaurant brandishing a firearm and demanding money. He asked if anyone else was there, and the employee said, “Yes, he’s in the back.”

The suspect then took the employee to the back, where he was suddenly and unexpectedly face-to-face with a uniformed law enforcement officer. The suspect then shot Sergeant Osborn twice.

With Sergeant Osborn down and incapacitated, the suspect completed the robbery, tied up the employee, and fled.

By all accounts, the suspect shot Sergeant Osborn simply because he was a law enforcement officer. He did not harm the employee.

Sergeant Osborn’s murder remained a cold case for 26 years. His killer was finally brought to justice and sentenced to 35 years in prison on August 22, 2024.
