Incident
Deputy Durm was assaulted and killed by an inmate during an escape from inside the Marion County Jail sally port at approximately 11:30 a.m. (Eastern).
The escape occurred while the inmate was being returned from a hospital visit. After attacking Deputy Durm, the inmate gained control of the transport van and fled. A short time later, the van crashed into a telephone pole, and the suspect was taken back into custody.
Deputy Durm's wife and son also work for the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
