Incident

While on patrol at approximately 4:45 p.m., Deputy Conley received an alert from a stationary license plate scanner that a vehicle whose owner was wanted was traveling nearby. Deputy Conley located the vehicle and effected a traffic stop on Interstate 75 southbound in Scott County. Almost immediately, Deputy Conley was shot by the occupant -- a wanted felon.

He was transported to the University of Kentucky Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.

After the shooting, the suspect shot a civilian during a carjacking. The civilian's injuries were serious but not life-threatening. The suspect was taken into custody a short time later.

Deputy Conley had served with the Scott County Sheriff's Office for four years. He had previously served in the U.S. Army for eight years.
