Incident

Town Marshal Whisman was shot during a traffic stop as he attempted to arrest an impaired driver. When the suspect pulled a gun, Marshal Whisman also drew his and fired. The driver was struck in the arm. The driver dropped the gun which his wife then retrieved. She fired and shot Marshal Whisman in the face.

Marshal Whisman was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries two weeks later. The wife was charged with second-degree murder but was acquitted by a jury.

Marshal Whisman's brother, Patrolman W. L. Whisman, served with the Louisville, Kentucky, Police Department at the time.
