Detective Sergeant Mason Griffith was shot and killed at Casey's Convenience Store at 115 Highway 19 in Hermann around 9:30 p.m.
Sergeant Griffith and another officer had responded to a disturbance at the convenience store. When they arrived, a shootout occurred and both officers were shot. Sergeant Griffith succumbed to his injuries at an area hospital. The second officer suffered critical life-changing injuries.
The suspect had a long criminal history and multiple outstanding felony warrants. He barricaded himself in a home near the shooting and was taken into custody the next afternoon.
Sergeant Mason also served as the part-time Chief of Police of the Rosebud Police Department and Reserve Deputy Sheriff of the Gasconade County Sheriff's Office.
