Deputy Coleman, Deputy John Maynard, and Deputy Marshal Hubert Stephens were investigating a shot that they heard fired outside of the branch courthouse in Phelps. They found a subject with a shotgun and ordered him to surrender the weapon. The man refused and fired a single shot that killed Deputy Coleman.
The other deputies disarmed the man, placed him under arrest, and charged him with the murder of Deputy Coleman.
