Chief Southerland died on January 12, 2020 after a long battle with occupational cancer. He retired from Westfield Fire Department on December 27, 2012 and was diagnosed with kidney cancer the following day.

Gary was one of the most caring men I have ever had the pleasure to know. His dedication to our community and to the men and woman of WFD goes unmatched. I miss hearing his whistling and being around his infectious happiness. We miss you Gary
