While serving as Acting Chief following the line-of-duty death of Chief Robert Orkies from COVID-19, Major Key also contracted the illness from presumed line-of-duty exposure. He succumbed after a month-long battle just two months after the death of Chief Orkies.
Major Keys spent over 50 years of his life in service to others. He spent over 29 years in the U.S. Army (including a tour in Vietnam), ten years as a reserve deputy with the Bullitt County Sheriff's Office, and 47 years with Zoneton Fire.
