On December 18, 1927, Deputy Wooton was shot by a man when the deputy entered a store. The man had held a grudge against Deputy Wooton for a misdemeanor offense that he had been cited for two weeks earlier. Deputy Wooten died at a Hazard Hospital 12 days later.
