Sergeant Collins and his wife (a civilian employee of the police department) were killed by a mentally deranged man who had stalked and ambushed them.

Sergeant Collins was off-duty at the time of the incident. When the suspect opened fire with a shotgun, Sergeant Collins attempted to protect his wife.

The assailant stated at his trial he shot Sergeant and Mrs. Collins because they worked for the sheriff's department. He was convicted and given to two life sentences.
