Deputy Marion Layne

As he was investigating a shooting on a highway between Garrett and Lackey, Deputy Layne was shot twice. Though seriously wounded, he was able to drive himself to Garrett and give a description of the assailants. He was taken to a hospital in Prestonsburg where he died two hours later. The suspects, both juveniles, were later apprehended.

Deputy Turner is buried in Turner Cemetery at Raven in Knott County, Kentucky.
