Her parents and a young son
Officer Leath was shot and killed when she and three other officers responded to a domestic violence incident just before 3:00 p.m. in the 1800 block of Edinburge Square on the city's east side.
The suspect was charged with murder and attempted murder. In 2024, he was found "guilty but mentally ill" of reckless homicide, which carries a maximum sentence of six years. He was also found guilty of attempted murder and criminal confinement for the woman he had been holding captive and who was also shot, and criminal recklessness for the shots he fired at the other three officers. The judge merged all sentences with the six-year sentence for Officer Leath's death and released the offender on good behavior to serve 15 years of mental health probation.
Officer Leath had served with the Indianapolis Metro Police Department for two years. She had also served in the National Guard. Her mother was a long-time emergency dispatcher, and her father was a Reserve Deputy Sergeant with the Marion County Sheriff's Office. He previously served with the Indiana Department of Correction. Her sister served in the jail division of the Marion County Sheriff's Office.
Two weeks after Officer Leath's death, the Indiana Women's Prison nursery, where she had worked prior to the Indianapolis Metro Police Department, was renamed to "Officer Breann Leath Maternal & Child Health Unit." In 2024, a mile-long stretch of Brookville Road from German Church Road, where she had served as an Officer, to Davis Road, near the neighborhood where she grew up, was dedicated as the "Officer Breann Leath Memorial Mile."
