Sergeant Bertram was killed in a vehicle crash while pursuing a stolen vehicle.
The pursuit began at approximately 10:20 P.M. in Charlestown (Clark County) and extended into Scott County. As the vehicles approached the intersection of State Road 3 and State Road 56 near Scottsburg, Sergeant Bertram's vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Sergeant Bertram was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect also crashed near the same location and fled on foot. He was apprehended hours later in the area where the pursuit began.
