Sergeant Paterson was killed in a motor vehicle crash during a high speed pursuit.
Three juvenile escapees from Stark County, Indiana were attempting to elude police in a stolen auto. As they entered Lake County on U.S. 30, the fleeing auto broadsided Sergeant Paterson's patrol car. Sergeant Paterson and one of the juveniles were killed.
