At approximately 9:30 Sunday evening, Sergeant Cox responded to a report of a van striking a horse-drawn carriage with possible entrapment and serious injuries. Upon completion of the incident, Sergeant Cox gave a ride home to one of the individuals who had been involved in the crash. As he was driving away, Sergeant Cox's vehicle stopped suddenly and then went fast in reverse. The resident notified police who found Sergeant Cox's vehicle stuck in a field with his tires spinning in reverse. Officers broke out a window, removed Sergeant Cox and began administering CPR. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
