Incident
On the night of the incident, a large fire had occurred at the Ely-Walker Dry Goods at Eighth and Washington Avenues. Firefighter Gottwald, who was assigned to Truck #3, was on a ladder and operating a hoseline to direct a stream on the fire. A wall suddenly collapsed and Firefighter Gottwald was buried by the debris. He died at the scene.
