Incident
While fighting a fire at Arnot's Livery Stables, a wall collapsed killing Captain Schimper and injuring several other firefighters. He was a member of Engine Company #6. The Arnot building occupied the center of the block bounded by Chestnut, Market, Ninth, and Tenth Streets.
Prior to joining the fire department, Captain Schimper was a pitcher with the Empire Baseball Club of Saint Louis.
