Firefighter Mebus died from injuries that he received while fighting a fire that originated in the Penny & Gentles retail store at Broadway and Franklin Avenues. Numerous other firefighters were injured following a collapse of the nearly five blocks that were destroyed in the fire. Firefighter Mebus was a member of Engine Company #11.
