While driving the engine of Company #15 to a reported fire, the engine crashed into an iron pillar that served as a railroad crossing gate. Firefighter Siebert was thrown from the engine and died at the scene. The accident also injured another firefighter as well as one of the horses. The horse, which suffered two broken legs, was later euthanized. Firefighter Siebert was a five year veteran of the department but had only been assigned to Company #15 for ten days.
