On September 15th, 1889 Capt. Edward Early along with 4 other firefighters lost their lives while fighting a fire at 6th & Main involving Bamberger, Bloom & Co.'s Store and adjoining buildings.

This occurred at Fire Alarm Box 48, known as Fatal 48.
