Detective Dorsett and Detective John Clifford were shot when they attempted to arrest a local preacher for stealing a dog. Detective Dorsett was transported to St. Mary's Hospital where he died the following day. Detective Clifford was transported to General Hospital with serious injuries. He later recovered.
On October 4, 1917, the last day of the suspects trial, Detective Dorsett's wife produced a gun; shot and seriously wounded the suspect in the court room. Court officers subdued her as spectators cried "shoot him again, shoot him again". The suspect was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 50 years in prison.
